Incognito 2003

Message par Tipif » ven. 12 mai 2006 13:00

The story of "Incógnito"
When Hans and Carrie Jorgensen saw Cortes de Cima for the first time in 1988, they knew that this was the place they had been searching for. The rolling hills reminded Carrie of her native California, and the sunny Mediterranean climate was the contrast to chilly Denmark for which Hans had been longing!

From the start, they did things differently from local custom, i.e. planting red wine varieties in a traditionally white wine area, introducing Syrah, (and at the time illegal!), using an untraditional 'New World' trellis system- just to name a few. When they bottled their first Syrah varietal in 1998, they were stuck on how to label it, since Syrah was still 'illegal' as a 'Vinho Regional' grape variety, so they called it 'Incógnito´.

Vintage 2003
BUD BREAK was 6th March, accompanied by hot and dry Carnival weather. Flowering was first observed in the vineyard on May 11th. The heat was a delaying factor in the phenolic maturity of the grapes. Vindima (harvest) started 26th August under a slow tempo, as Hans carefully selected only the ripest areas in each field for harvest, leaving the rest for further maturing. In contrast to last year’s freak September rains, this year’s harvest was under the usual clement Alentejan skies, with only a single day of rain recorded. Last day of harvest was the 5th of October. Baumé averaged around 14,5.

Winemaker's comments
Deep, intense, purple red colour. This Incógnito is an intensely concentrated Syrah, with spicy, peppery aromas of blackberry, licorice, plums and molasses. The palate is rich with huge flavour intensity, with toasty oak tannins. The wine has great length and structure with beautiful balance.

Reviews
Ripe and rich, its cassis and damson nose is lifted by grassy scents. Long, full Morello cherry palate.
- Wine Intl. Oct 2005

Fruit and juicy, with great dark color, smooth, ripe tannins, and big, open fruit flavors. - RV - Wine Enthusiast 3/06

This has become a bit of a cult wine in Portugal. It’s a varietal Syrah, and displays a full, rich, spicy tarry nose with nicely defined fresh red berry fruits. The palate is open with more berry fruits and some lushness. It’s a seductive style of wine. Very good/excellent - Jamie Goode
