The balanced palate delivers plum and berry fruit but even more vanilla and mocha. Maybe too oaky? Regardless, it's very good Syrah for Chile.

Barely budging in hue, the 2006 Amon-Ra Shiraz gives a very deep purple-black color and earthy, gamey aromas of forest floor, moss covered bark, Peking duck skin, mulberries, dried plums, blackberry preserves, incense, cinnamon stick and cloves. Very crisp, concentrated and full with medium-firm velvety tannins, it presents a slightly warm yet long and engaging finish. It’s approachable now and should continue to develop, drinking to 2022+. Shows a slightly lifted, peppery character on the nose, but also plenty of toasty oak and bold fruit. Loads of blackberries, blueberries and chocolate cascade over the palate, accented with enough spice and warmth to leave a fleeting impression of fruitcake. Lush and long on the finish. Inky ruby. Exotically perfumed nose displays ripe blueberry, boysenberry, cinnamon, wilted flowers and patchouli; smells like a head shop. Chewy dark berry flavors soften with air, ultimately offering superb clarity and a velvety texture. Becomes sweeter on the finish, with slowly building tannins adding an impression of structure to this sexy fruit bomb. This is the style that made the Barossa famous. (8/ 2008)

2007 Cayuse Syrah Cailloux Vineyard

Baron’s 2007 Syrah Cailloux Vineyard is unusual for its combination of Cote Rotie-like bacon, smoky black tea, and floral aromatic overtones with rich chocolate and licorice, all of these mingling with sappy confitured dark berries. This is amazingly supple and silken-textured, not because the tannins were baked-out of the fruit on the vine, but instead simply because they’re so fine. After setting you up for a continuation of its incredible richness all the way to a long finish, it introduces tar, black pepper, and an almost horseradish- and mustard green-like bite for an effect of spine- not just tongue-tingling invigoration. At the same time, the mouthwateringly carnal aspects of this multifarious performance are never far below the surface. (While I realize it isn’t 'supposed' to show up its Bionic Frog counterpart, when tasted alongside one recognizes that this must be having an exceedingly good day. I suspect this Cailloux will remain well worth revisiting for the better part of a decade.) (12/ 2012)

The saturated purple 2007 Syrah Cailloux Vineyard contains 4% Viognier in the blend. It displays a Cote-Rotie-like nose of smoked meat, olives, herbs, game, and bacon. Layered, plush, and super-rich, this full-bodied, pleasure-bent effort has exceptional length. Difficult to resist now, it can be enjoyed over the next 10-12 years.

Good full ruby-red. Initially reticent nose shows black fruits, black olive, pepper, wild herbs, dried rose and violet face powder as it opens in the glass; I would have picked this as northern Rhone and been shocked to find I was wrong. Sweet, dense and primary, with intense flavors similar to the aromas. Really remarkably energetic and delineated for Washington syrah, offering outstanding grip and inner-mouth perfume. This somehow saturates the palate while coming off as weightless. Finishes very long and fine, with lingering notes of pepper, herbs and spices. A great vintage for Cayuse's flagship bottling. I have tasted the 2010 Syrah Five Shooter on numerous occasions, and it has never been anything less than stellar. A stunning, expressive bouquet melds into layers of dark fruit, black pepper, sage, menthol, minerals and spices, all supported by intense graphite and melted road tar undertones. The wine seems to gain intensity with time in the glass, leading to a huge, explosive, saline-infused finish. The 2010 Syrah Five Shooter is a stunner from Sine Qua Non. The blend is 85% Syrah, 5% Grenache, 5% Roussanne, 3% Petite Sirah and 2% Viognier, with a total of 20% whole clusters, that spent 22 months in French oak barrels, about 59% new. Drinking window: 2016 - 2026. (7/ 2013)

The 2010 Syrah Five Shooter is straight up gorgeous. A massive wine that somehow holds everything together, it offers a wild array of cassis, blackberry, white chocolate, underbrush and pepper that flows to a full-bodied, layered Syrah that has masses of fine tannin and enough substance to evolve for decades. A blend of 85% Syrah, 5% Grenache, 3% Petite Sirah, 5% Roussanne and 2% Viognier that was fermented with 20% whole cluster and aged 22 months in 59% new French oak, it opens up beautifully in the glass and should be decanted if drinking anytime soon. Bright and energetic on the palate, displaying cherry-cola and dark berry flavors and energizing spiciness. Dusty, fine-grained tannins add support to the very sweet, persistent, well-focused finish. Shows a very suave blend of richness and vivacity, which Krankl attributes to the roussanne component in the blend. (11/ 2012)
