Vintage Latest : Leoville Barton et Langoa Barton

Message par Ecco » mer. 26 avr. 2006 17:29

"... has been very firmly back at the top of the super-seconds, and still sells for prices which are remarkably reasonable, both at the outset and subsequently at auction ... this Léoville is a full, rich, aristocratic wine which needs a good dozen years in a good vintage before it is ready. All vintages since 1985 can be enthusiastically recommended." (The Wines and Domaines of France, 2000)

et sur Langoa-Barton maintenant:
"... a little softer, a little more feminine, a little earlier to develop ... Since Anthony Barton took over in 1983, this has been consistently reliable and splendid value."

et les mots de la fin pour notre préféré, RP:
"one cannot admire enough proprietor Anthony Barton and his classic, potentially long-lived wines that are models of power, elegance, and longevity – in short, these wines symbolize what makes Bordeaux so world-renowned!" (Wine Advocate, April 2006)

Chateau Léoville-Barton 1986 Mar-02 19/25
This is the most backward Leoville-Barton I have tasted. Nose is wood, plum and pencil-lead. Palate is very tight and backward, though will it have the fruit to ever fully mature? For now the least enjoyable to drink though is may come round in 5 years. A broody Barton that has the potential to be truly amazing in a decade's time.

Chateau Léoville-Barton 1988 Jul-01 21/25
Underrated wine. Deep colour. Deep intense meaty nose. Slightly austere. A developing minerally palate. Quite rich and elegant with classic tobacco notes. Intense cranberry finish. A classic Bordeaux in every sense.

Chateau Léoville-Barton 1993 Dec-00 19/25
A lovely classic Bordeaux nose: autumn leaves, wood and dried fruits. Quite and acidic entry with a soft tannic core. A potentially great wine struggling against the vintage. A fine 1993 like La Dominique.

Chateau Léoville-Barton 1994 Dec-98 19/25
Intense purple red. Young. Blackcurrants, spice, mint. Firm tannins. Cedar, violets and blackcurrants on the palate. A touch fatter than the 1993. Excellent big-boned claret with a fine long finish. Very good for the vintage.

Chateau Léoville-Barton 1997 Apr-02 19/25
Tasted twice. Soft rounded berry nose. Quite pretty and Margaux in style. Fine sweet tannins. Notes of cherry, toffee and strawberry. Light but elegant with good acidity. Very pretty wine. Good medium-term drinking claret.

Chateau Léoville-Barton 1998 May-00 21/25
An exemplary wine. Nose is closed but dense tobacco fruit underneath. Silky smooth tannins. Very classy and feminine. Good depth. Dried leaves and herbs. A powerful liquorish finish. Give it a decade. Certainly a step up from previous vintages.

Chateau Léoville-Barton 1999 Nov-03 20/25
First tasted at the chateau in Feb-02: a superb Barton this year. Deep plummy/blackcurrant nose. Pure. Good structure/tannins. Ripe sweet black cherry fruit. Stylish wine. After 1 yr, wonderful integration and smoothness. Divine. (22/25) Again at the MW tasting in Nov-03: it had lost a little of its initial promise but still an excellent wine. A perfumed red-berried nose. The oak is still quite pronounced, very sweet and vanillary. The palate is dominated by the Cabernet and does not quite have the depth that I remember. Well-integrated oak. Smooth and seductive - I think this will be earlier drinking than I initially thought but the persistent finish augurs well. (20/25)

Chateau Léoville-Barton 2001 Nov-05 21/25
Apr-03: a lovely minerally nose with fine definition. Loaded with plum and blackberry. Palate has fine concentration and definition, an aristocratic feel like the 1999 and 2000. Perfect combination of power and balance. I love this wine just as much as the 2000. Superb. (22/25) Again in Nov-03: the nose seems to have closed in the interim with just faint aroma of cigar-box. The palate is concentrated, complex with smooth tannins. There is a note of cedar and pine coming through on the mid-palate. Perhaps now I consider this a less of a vin de garde than 2000 but still very impressive. (21/25) Then at the IMW tasting in Nov-05. The nose has opened up a little since 2003: blackberry, cigar-box and some violets blossoming. The palate is full-bodied with good weight, firm, quite masculine tannins with a meaty, dried blood tinged core of black fruits. Turning more cedary in the glass and an lmost animally finish. Lots of character, quite a protean Leoville-Barton. Drink from 2010. (21/25)

Chateau Léoville-Barton 2002 May-05 21/25
En primeur in Apr-03: yet again Barton shows its class. A fragrant cassis and cedar nose. The palate is very elegant and showing the harmony lacking in other St. Julien wines. Lots of cedar and blackcurrant fruits, so much sophistication and class. Superb wine. (21/25) Consistent notes after bottling. A graceful nose of cedar, tobacco and leather. The palate is well balanced with fine, fresh acidity. Quite chewy tannins, good weight and grip. Firm, solid wine built on classic lines. It will take a little longer to mature than Langoa (around 2012). Superb (again). (21/25) The nose seems to have shut down with faint scents of black olives and blackberry leaf. The palate has similarly gone into its shell but there is great persistency on the finish. A fine, perhaps long-term Barton that might surprise a few people in years to come. (21/25)

Ch. Langoa-Barton 1992
Jun-98 13
Nose weak and lacking. A little unbalanced and lacked depth and grip. Stalky and very green. Very astringent on the finish. Poor.

Ch. Langoa-Barton 1995 Apr-05 16
A lean leathery nose that lacks a little vigor. Very sweet, almost cloying palate that lacks structure and has low acidity, rendering it monolithic. Drink now.

Ch. Langoa-Barton 1996 Apr-02 22
Tasted twice. Blew me away blind! Dense red fruits on nose. Black pepper & redcurrants. Superb concentration & seamless tannins. Approachable. Liquorish, kirsch finish. Superb.

Ch. Langoa-Barton 1997 Apr-02 19
Good stuff! Subtle sweet feminine nose. Black fruits. Soy. Light tannins with well-knit palate. Quite open and expressive. Nice robust, almost meaty finish. As good as Barton!

Ch. Langoa-Barton 1998 May-00 20
A great Langoa - nose slowly opening up. Dark black fruits with masses of pencil-lead aromas. Good depth with structured inky black fruits. This is an excellent well-made wine.

Ch. Langoa-Barton 1999 Nov-03 20
May 2001: attractive minty/blackcurrant fruit. Pure Cabernet fruit. Good depth. Chewy palate with good ripeness. Medium-bodied. Well-integrated saturated tannins. Well-made but relatively simple wine. Fine. (19/25) Another very fine bottle in Nov-03: a lovely ripe Cabernet nose beginning to develop roasted coffee bean aromas. Good concentration with well-knit oak. Cranberry and cassis. Cedary finish. Lovely balance. 5-8 years. (20/25)

Ch. Langoa Barton 2000 Nov-04 21
A soft, floral almost Margaux like nose. Blackberry and vanilla. Quite sensuous. Very smooth, seamless palate with notes of ripe blackberry, espresso, leather and pain grille. There is a touch of dryness on the finish. Again so supple and corpulent, masking the structure underneath. Drink from 2008.

Ch. Langoa-Barton 2001 Nov-05 20
Very little on the nose. The palate is light, easy-drinking and forward but still well-balanced and classy in its own way. Light tannins, gamey with blackberry finish. Quite rustic, perhaps coarse, but I still like it! 5-8 years. (18/25) Then at the Justerini tasting in Nov-04. The nose is more open: sweet blackberry and iodine, almost Margaux-like. Moderate complexity on the palate, well balanced with light, graceful tannins. Sappy finish - it has certainly lost its rusticity. Very fine. (20/25) Then at the IMW tasting in Nov-05. Langoa has really stepped up a gear in recent years. The nose is still open and expressive with a touch of plum developing. The palate displays good balance, quite assertive with bright blackberry and blueberry fruit. A little "chunky" on the finish, not as elegant as I recall though with a lot of charm. Drink over 6-10 years. (20/25)

Ch. Langoa-Barton 2002 May-05 20
First tasted en primeur in Jun-03. An elegant understated Cabernet Sauvignon nose. Not powerful of complex but well-defined. The palate is fine concentration and balance with some peppery black fruits. Good acidity, still quite tight but this will make a lovely wine in 5-6 years. Probably keenly priced too. (20/25) Tasted again after bottling and a further improvement. A very elegant nose, iodine scented nose. Complex and well-defined. Touch of sea-salt on the palate with refined black fruits and a little spice. Very good weight on the mid-palate: lots of muscle but its all kept in check. Very well knit, quite backward: this Langoa certainly needs some cellaring. Quite powerful and stern on the finish. Dare I say it, but as good as Leoville Barton. (21/25) Then in May-05. A tobacco, cigar-box nose with a touch of leather. Moderate intensity. The palate is better with firm, rigid tannins, quite masculine with excellent weight. Not quite as classy as its first two showings but still a very impressive Langoa, very classic in style with a stern, brambly finish. Excellent. (20/25)
